Roadways
With a road network of over 4,689,842 kilometres, India has one of the largest road networks in
the world. The network is aggregating about 33 lakh kilometers long at present. The details of the
main roads and highways are as follows:
National Highways/Expressways 65,590 km
State Highways 1,28,000 km
Major and other District Roads 4,70,000 km
Rural Roads 26,50,000 km
Generally, a lane has a width of 3.75 m in case of single lane and 3.5 per lane in case of multilane
National Highways. The National Highways are further divided based on the carriageway width.
Single Lane 32 %
Double/Intermediate Lane 56 %
Four Lane/Six Lane/Eight Lane 12 %
The Central Government takes care of the development and maintenance of the National
Highway system. The Ministry comes out the development and maintenance work of the National
Highways through three agencies, namely:
National Highway Authority of India (NHAI)
State Public Works Departments (PWDs)
Border Road Organisation (BRO)
