Railways

Indian Railways is known to be the

largest railway network in Asia and

world's largest railway system under a

single management.

The first railway on Indian sub-continent

ran over a stretch of 21 miles from

Bombay to Thane. The idea of a railway

to connect Bombay with Thane, Kalyan

and with the Thal and Bhore Ghats

inclines first occurred to Mr. George

Clark, the Chief Engineer of the Bombay

Government, during a visit to Bhandup

in 1843.

Nowadays, every city, town and village is

connected with railways. Through

railways very large volumes of goods can

be transported at cheaper rates over

long distances in the country.

Railways help to transport raw materials

from industries located at considerable

distances. Besides this, railways also Major railroutes of India
transport large amount of steel,

automobiles, war equipment, across the country.

Railroads concentrate on the container traffic. They are becoming more responsive of the

customer needs, emphasising on bulk industries and heavy manufacturing.

Railroads are even concentrating on the development of special equipment. There are unit trains

which carry the same commodity in bulk like coal or grain.

They are faster, less expensive to operate and quicker as it can bypass rail yards and go direct to the

product’s destination. Metro trains are the popular means of transport in Delhi, Kolkata and

Mumbai.
