Balanced Diet
A balanced diet is one that helps maintain
or improve overall health. It gives our body
all the nutrients it needs to function
properly. In order to get truly balanced
nutrition, we should obtain the majority of
our daily calories from fresh fruits and
vegetables, whole grains and lean
proteins.
Preserving Food Balanced diet
If we keep food items for a long time, they get spoilt. Spoilt food is unhealthy for us.
We should not eat spoilt food. It can make us ill. So, in order to keep the food items
fresh we can preserve them by various methods. Let’s read about some methods.
Refrigerating
We should keep food in the fridge to keep it fresh for a few days. For example, we keep
leftover cooked food in the fridge and use it the next day.
Drying
Some food items can be stored after drying them. For example, grapes are dried to
make raisins.
Pickling
Fruits and vegetables are mixed with oil and salt to make pickles. Adding salt to the
pickles makes them stay fresh for a few days.
Canning and Bottling
We make sauces and jams and preserve them in cans and bottles.
Deep Freezing
Some food items are deep freezed to preserve them for a long time. These food items
can be stored for months. For example, fish, meat, corn, peas, etc.
