Thorn Forests

The trees of Thorn forests have long roots that are spread over a large area. They are found in the
desert areas of Rajasthan, southern Punjab and Haryana. These trees absorb water and minerals
for them to survive. The trees in the thorn forests have thorns to keep the animals away from
them. Plants like- cacti and wild palms grow in such forests. Many animals like- Great Indian
Bustard, Indian Gazelle and desert cat are found in these forests.

Tidal Forests

Indian tidal or mangrove forests are mainly situated on the Gangetic Delta and in Coastal Plains in
West Bengal, called the Sunderban. The Sunderban have recently been listed in the UNESCO
World Heritage List and been named as Sundarban National Park. These forests are formed where
a river branches out into smaller parts before entering the sea.
These are known as the Sunderbans. The trees found in this region are sundari trees. Shrubs, ferns
and palms also grow in this region. These trees can grow in freshwater. The roots of these trees
hang above the mud and water to absorb the air. Many species of birds, Royal Bengal Tiger and
crocodiles are also found in these forests.
