Three Basins
An area which is watered by the rivers flowing from the Himalayas is known as basin. These rivers
flow from the basin to the sea. Sometime on the way the rivers are joined with other rivers. These
other rivers are known as tributaries.
There are three main river basins:
1) Satluj River Basin 2) Ganga River Basin 3) Brahmaputra River Basin

Satluj River Basin Bhakhra Dam
Sutlej River is the longest of the five rivers that flow through the Ganga flowing through
historic crossroad region of Punjab in northern India and the Himalayas
Pakistan. This river basin originates in Tibet near the Kailash
Mansarovar Lake. Two states of India, Punjab and Haryana, lie in
Satluj River Basin. Bhakhra Dam has been built in this river basin
to provide water and electricity to people living near the region.
Ganga River Basin
The river Ganges is considered to be the holiest river in India. It
originates from the Gangotri glacier. Yamuna is the main
tributary of Ganga. Ganga flows down the mountains and enter
the plains in Haridwar. Then it flows through the states of
Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. In West
Bengal it is divided into two branches - Hugli and Padma. The
Hugli river flows through Kolkata into the Bay of Bengal. The
Padma river flows through Bangladesh and joins Brahmaputra.
