Mountains are one of the physical divisions

of India. Now, let’s read to know
more about them.

Northern Plains

Plains of Northern India, also Northern Plains of India
known as Indo-Gangetic Plain Northern Plains of India
or the North Indian River Plain,
are a flat and enormous plain.
These plains lie from Punjab in
the west to Assam in the east.
These plains are fed by many
rivers flowing down from the
Himalayas. These rivers carry
soil, sand and bits of rocks.
These get deposited in the
plains. This fine soil is known
as alluvium. It is very good for
growing crops.

Note for the Teacher

Discuss in the class about the plains of Northern India and its features that make the land fit for
growing crops. Also discuss with the students about the states in this region and the three river
basins.
