Let’s Read to Learn...

Soil is our prime natural and economic resource.
Soils in India differ in composition and structure.

Let's read about various types of
                                                                 soils present in our country.

Soil

Soil is one of the three major natural resources, alongside air and water. It is one of the marvellous
products of nature and without which there would be no life. It is a natural medium for growth of
plants. Soil is the unconsolidated mineral matter that has been subjected to, and influenced by,
genetic and environmental factors - parent
material, climate, organisms and topography;
all acting over a period of time. They serve as a
reservoir of nutrients and water for crops,
provide mechanical anchorage and favourable
tilth to the crops. The components of soil are
mineral matter, organic matter, water and air.
There are many soil classification systems.
There are two major systems namely the
vernacular system and scientific system. Six
different types of soils are found in India

 Note for the Teacher

Tell the students about the different types of soils and their features. Also tell them about the
need of soil for the plants. Discuss with them about soil erosion and its causes. Encourage them to
plant more and more trees to save our environment.
