Non-Renewable Resources

Non-renewable resources are resources for which there is a limited supply. Oil, coal, petroleum,
gas and minerals are some good examples of Non-renewable resources. They have been formed
over millions of years and will eventually get depleted altogether. Let’s read about them.

Petroleum Petrol Pump

Petroleum is a general term for oil and natural gas. It is usually found
in underground areas called reservoirs. Basically, it comes from the
liquified, fossilized remains of plants and animals that lived hundreds
of millions of years ago. Once the oil sources are depleted, they
cannot be replaced. It is an energy source that is used to create fuels,
such as- gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. It is also used in the
manufacturing of plastics and industrial chemicals. The
environmental impacts of mining oil include threats to waterways,
plants and wildlife due to oil spills and increased infrastructure in
natural areas.

Coal

Coal is the world's most plentiful fossil fuel. It is made when plant
materials have been compressed in bogs for millions of years. The
extraction of coal from surface and sub-surface mines creates
numerous problems for humans and the environment. Sub-surface
mines are dangerous for miners as tunnels can collapse and built-up
gas can explode. The combustion of coal contributes to air pollution
and global climate change and creates a toxic ash as a byproduct. Coal
Coal is used for domestic and industrial purposes.

Natural Gas

Natural gas is one of the cleanest, safest and most useful forms of energy in
our day-to-day lives. It originates from the remains of plants and animals
that lived many millions of years ago. Natural gas is both colourless and
odourless and is in fact a mixture of hydrocarbons. It is filled in pipelines for
used of cooking, heating homes and fueling vehicles.
