Shell
The bodies of snails, tortoises and turtles are covered with shells. Shell of tortoise
This is very hard and protects the body. When these animals sense
danger, they withdraw their head and fit into the shell. A shell
works as a shield.
Feathers
Feathers of birds Birds are covered with feathers that help them to fly and protect
them from rain. Feathers also keep their bodies warm and
protect them from cold.
Fur or Hair
Animals like sheep and bear have fur or hair on their Hair of sheep
bodies. They protect them from cold and rain. Human
beings have hair all over their body.
Camouflage
camouflage The body coverings of some animals are such that they
of chameleon match their surroundings. It makes difficult to spot the these
animal. It protects the animals from enemies. Some animals
like chameleon can even change their colour according to
their surroundings. This mechanism is called camouflage.
How Animals Breathe
Like humans, animals also breathe to stay alive. When an animal breathes it takes in
oxygen and gives out carbon dioxide. Different animals have different organs to breathe.
Let’s study them.
Lungs Animal lungs
Animals like mammals, birds and reptiles have lungs inside of their
bodies. They breathe with the help of lungs. In mammals, the two
lungs are located near the backbone on either side of the heart.
Birds have honeycomb-like lungs, which contain millions of tiny
passages called parabronchi. Reptile lungs are less spongy and
hollower, which makes them less efficient at getting oxygen.
