Chapter 2 ExtenMdeyd Family

The defini on of extended family is simply a family unit that extends the nuclear
family to include other rela ves such as aunts, uncles, and grandparents. There is
more to an extended family however, than just a list of rela ves and understanding
the structure of an extended family and why it can be a valuable type of family unit,
can help you be er understand your own family structure.

Alina and her father are helping her mother to finish the house work quickly. They are
leaving for Mumbai to a end a family func on. Her uncle has promised to teach Alina
how to ride a bicycle!

Alina lives in Dehradun with her parents. Her father is
an engineer and her mother is a doctor. They are her
immediate family.

Her grandparents live in a village in Rajasthan.
Her uncles, aunts and cousins live in different ci es.
Alina meets them only on special occasions or during holidays.
Though they do not live together, they are part of Alina's extended family.

An extended family is a family that extends beyond the immediate family, consis ng
of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins all part of the same household. Extended
families give us a sense of belonging through their love and care.
