There are 28 permanent teeth in all. Between the age group of 17 and 25, four more
teeth called wisdom teeth usually grow at the back of the mouth. The wisdom teeth
complete the adult set of 32 teeth.

Kinds of Teeth

There are different types of permanent teeth in our mouth. Each one has its own
function. Let’s read about them.
Incisors: Incisors are eight in number. There are four in each jaw. They are used to cut
and bite food.
Canines: Canines are four in number. There are two in each jaw. There is one canine
beside each incisor. They are used for tearing food. Canines are sharp teeth.
Premolars: There are eight premolars, four in each jaw. They are beside the canines.
They are used to crush and chew food.
Molars: Molars are twelve in number. There are six in each jaw. They are big and flat.
There are two molars on each side of premolars. Out of twelve only eight molars grow
first and the remaining four grow later. They help to chew and grind food well.

 Flesh-eating animals have very bigger and sharper canines. These teeth help them to
              tear flesh easily.

 Plant-eating animals have premolars and molars as they need to chew and grind food.
