There are many poor and homeless people in towns and ci es. These people live
either on the streets or in slum areas. Slums can be seen in most large ci es of the
world. These are unplanned housing areas which are overcrowded and the people
live in acute poverty. They have no proper water supply, electricity, sanita on and no
proper disposal of waste. These are temporary se lements of poor people. The
government has been trying to improve the condi on of slum dwellers by moving
them to low-cost houses built for them. However, slums s ll exist in pockets within
every city.
Houses for animals
We all need shelter to cover and
protect ourselves from the outside
world. For humans a shelter is a
house. But in the case of animals and
birds, their shelter diļ¬ers from
animal to animal. It may be a dark
cave ceiling to a bat, the underside of
a tree bark to a beetle, nest to a bird,
web to a spider or a shed to a cow.
Where do animals live?
Some animals live on land, some in water, while some live both on land and in water.
Some animals live under the ground also. The homes of animals depend on where
animal lives.
Land animals
The land animals homes vary from dens, burrows, hollow logs and trees to numerous
types of nests. Lions and bears live in dens. Birds, orangutans and monkeys live on
trees. Rabbits, moles, porcupines and earthworms live in underground burrows and
tunnels. Snakes live in underground holes called pits.
