Tongue
and teeth
Chapter
Tas ng food
When we eat food, our tongue helps us in tas ng
it. There are many taste buds on our tongue which
are called papillae. Papillae are the reddish bumps
on our tongue. Each taste bud is connected to
brain with a nerve. The impulses from the tongue
reach the brain within seconds. Our brain then
tells us the taste and decides whether we like it or
not. We can tell immediately if the food we ate
was sweet, bi er, salty or sour. The tongue also
helps us to swallow food and talk.
Teeth
Teeth help us to chew food so that it is
digested properly. You would not be able
to bite into an apple or take a bite from a
slice of pizza if you did not have teeth.
Crown is the visible part of a tooth. The
white enamel or den ne is the strongest
substance in our body. Root is the anchor
of a tooth that extends into the jawbone.
You must have no ced old people
develop hollows in their cheeks and they
do not speak clearly. It is because old people o en
lose their teeth and they have to use dentures or false teeth.
Remember, when you lost a tooth you too sounded diļ¬erent!
