The only river that crosses these sands is the Luni, which joins the Arabian Sea through the Rann of
Kutch. The Luni is the only major river of the area and it serves as an essential source of irrigation
waters.
The sand becomes very hot during the day time due to the heat of the sun. As the day falls, the
sand begins to cool. Hence, the days of the desert region are hot and the nights are cool. The
summers are very hot while the winters are very cold.
Due to the availability of less water, there is less flora and fauna in this region. Mainly, thorny
shrubs and bushes grow in this region like- cactus, babool and keekar because they do not need
much water. A small water body is found in the deserts which contain little amount of water. This
small water body is known as an oasis.

Jaisalmer, Bikaner, and Jodhpur are three main
cities of Rajasthan. Many villages and towns have
grown in this region. In the villages, people grow
a some crops. They also keep camels, goats and
cattle as they move from one place to another
due to less availability of water. These people are
known as nomads or banjaras.
A camel caravan is common in the desert region.
It is a long chain of camels and people moving
from one place to another. The camels are very
helpful animals of the desert region as they can
live without food and water for many days. Their
padded feet helps them to walk easily on the
desert sand. Camels also give milk to the people.
Camel hair is also used to make clothes.
