Manure and fer lizer are added to the soil to make the soil rich in nutrients and reap a
healthy crop later. A er adding manure to soil, seeds are sown. A er a few days, small
plants appear.

Young plants are water regularly and sprayed with pes cides and insec cides to keep
the plants safe from insects. Irriga on is the process of watering the crops. The crops
are ripe and ready to be cut in about six months. The cu ng of crops is called
harves ng. A er this, the grains are separated from the plants. This is called
threshing. Removing the husk further cleans grains. This process is called winnowing.

Now the crops are ready to be packed and sent to the local mandi or wholesale market
on tractors, trucks, or bullock carts.

Some me this food has to be processed in special factories. Rice and pulses are

transported to 'mill' for polishing before they can be sent to a mandi for further
distribu on. The distributor then sells this to a grocery store from where you can buy
it. The shopkeeper is called a retailer and you are the consumer.
