Sameer is a mechanic and he works in a motor garage.
He started off as a helper. Over the years he learnt his
job so well that he was made the chief mechanic by
owner of the garage. He can now repair scooters,
motorcycles and cars. People in the neighbourhood
prefer to get their vehicles repaired by Sameer.
Golu drives a school bus as he is a bus driver. His job has huge responsibili es. He has
to follow the traffic rules. He cannot come late for work.
Gender and work
Meet Lakshmi. She is the only woman auto-rickshaw
driver in Delhi. Lakshmi says that she had to fight for two
long years to get a driving license to drive a commercial
vehicle.
Seema is studying very hard these days because she wants to become a civil engineer
to fulfill her childhood dream. Dams and bridges fascinated Seema ever since she was
a li le girl. Seema remembers how difficult it was to convince her parents about her
dream. They thought engineering was a tough job and very difficult for women to
handle. As a civil engineer she would have to spend a lot of me at the construc on
sites. She would not be able to cope with the heat and dust. But Seema told her
parents that no amount of difficul es can keep her from following her dream. Finally,
her parents agreed with her and gave her permission to join the engineering college.
Things have changed now. Women are doing be er in the jobs that were earlier not
considered suitable for women.
