Chapter 5 work
               Around Us

The people are engaged in doing some work, whether at school or in your
neighbourhood. People do different jobs to earn their livelihood. The work done by
different people is of great help to us.

Different kinds of work
Govinda is a po er. He makes clay pots that are used in different things depending on
its shape and size. Govinda makes 'diyas' during Diwali and people use it to decorate
their homes. Govinda learnt this skill from his father but he would not like his children
to become po er. Both his children go to school and he would like them to take up
some other jobs when they grow up. He is afraid that his cra would soon die as it has
become difficult to make enough money being a po er because no one buys clay pots
these days.
Mamta is a tailor and she s tches mostly women's
clothes. She learnt s tching from her mother. She first
cuts the cloth with a pair of scissors and then s tches it
on a sewing machine. Some customers ask for
embroidery on the clothes. Mamta's husband, Amit
makes beau ful embroidery designs using colourful silken threads. He learnt the skill
from his mother-in-law.
Suraj mends torn shoes and makes new ones. He is a
cobbler. He grew up watching his father working with
leather and making different things. That is how he
learnt the cra . He uses special thread to s tch shoes,
he feels sad that everyone prefers to wear factory-
made shoes these days.
