How does
           food reach us
Chapter 8

The plants make most of the food we eat. Plants grow old as surely as do animals
however; a generally accepted defini on of age in plants has not yet been realized.
Cereals, pulses, fruits and vegetables, spices, and the oils we use for cooking, are all
obtained from different plants. Plants give us beverages such as coffee, tea and cocoa.
Herbs and spices have been used for centuries to flavour and preserve food.

 Cereals or food grains
Rice, wheat, oat, maize, millets are grains or cereals. Wheat is usually ground to flour.
Bread, ro , naan, puri and paranthas are made from wheat flour. Rice is a staple or
basic food in many parts of the country. It is eaten in many forms during all meals.
Oats, maize, wheat and rice flakes are also eaten as breakfast cereals.
